Insoluble API places special demands on solid dosage forms. For example, for immediate release applications it is critical that dosage forms dissolve rapidly in the upper GI to obtain maximum absorption. For weak base compounds, avoiding dissolution in the stomach may be critical for maximizing absorption and reducing variability.

Solid dispersion formulations use polymers, and thus the design of tablets and capsules of these formulations must take into consideration the unique dissolution characteristics of these materials.
